Giving Thanks for God’s Good Gifts!
Jonathan, Pastor Mere and Dave

Jonathan, Pastor Mere and Dave

This last Friday I experienced one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. Even though this last year has been hard as my family and I have been mourning Hannah’s moving to heaven, the Lord has blessed us with some exceptional experiences, especially lately.

What made Friday so special?

Two main reasons. First, I spent the whole day with one of my son’s, Jonathan. It’s always a special time when I can be with David and Jonathan. We enjoyed driving out to Mexicali and having wonderful interaction along the way. It encourages me so much to see how Jonathan has grown in his love for Christ since his sister moved to heaven. He could have become bitter and angry at God. Instead he’s pushed into Christ and grown tremendously. This is one of the legacies I feel that Hannah has left. The impact she left on both of her brothers. Thank you, Lord for redeeming the pain of Hannah’s early homegoing!

The Foundation is being Laid
The foundation for the new church in Mexicali, Mexico

The foundation for the new church in Mexicali, Mexico

The second reason is we went to Mexicali to see the foundation being poured for the new church that we are building to honor Hannah. It filled me up to overflowing to see this dream becoming a reality. Thank you, Jesus!

I also enjoyed spending some time with the church planter and his wife. Pastor Mere Godinez and his wife, Edna. Mere and his father-in-law, Rafael were working hard laying the foundation for the church.

Some of the neighbors who are interested in seeing the church built were also there. The church actually is right next to Alfonso and Cristina’s house. They used to live in Tijuana and they attended one of the Ministerios Transformación churches in TJ. That’s what brought about the connection. Alfonso and Cristina moved back to Mexicali and they started praying that the Lord would raise up a church in their community.

Years of Prayer for This New Church
Cristina with her three children - she prayed for 3 years for this church!

Cristina with her three children – she prayed for 3 years for this church!

Cristina told me that she prayed for three years that the Lord would bring a church to the community that they live in, which is just outside of Mexicali. The church is close to an hour from the Mexicali – El Centro border crossing.

I loved learning about how the Lord is already working in this community preparing the people to receive the Word of Life. Cristina said that her mom even felt a number of years ago that the Lord was going to build a church on the land right next to the house. Even though they’ve only lived in the house the last few years, they’ve owned the property for a number of years.

The last church we helped Ministerios Transformación start in Rosarito was built and inaugurated the day before Hannah moved to heaven. That church has struggled some to get going. There have been a number of obstacles, and we’ve felt much opposition there. We know as we move into new communities we are bringing the light into dark places. There is a battle that rages on. We are still praying and hopeful that the church in Rosarito will experience breakthrough and make a difference in the community.

Light in the Darkness

This church in Mexicali represents new hope as Christ shines in a place where there is much need. Pray with us as we work with Pastor Mere, his wife Edna and the ministry of Ministerios Transformación to build this church on the weekend of April 14 and 15.

There is still time to help us build this church. We’ve been given a matching fund as we continue to raise funds for this project. You can give online here.

Thanks so much for standing with us in prayer. Our battle is not against flesh and blood! We give thanks for your love and support you’ve shown us in a number ways as we move forward and continue serving the Lord!

Our Princess Warrior – Hannah Diaso
Our beautiful daughter and beloved sister, Hannah

Our beautiful daughter and beloved sister, Hannah

On Tuesday, October 18th our beautiful daughter, and beloved sister went to be with the Lord. A tragic loss! Yet our refrain continues to be, “we grieve, but not as those without hope.” We are a hopeful family, surrounded by a wonderful community of hopeful people. The hope that the Lord has displayed to us is a Biblical hope, which is a hope of certainty that Hannah is with her heavenly Father, and that we will see her again in glory.

On Wednesday, October 26th we mourned Hannah’s loss and celebrated her life at the graveside service and the funeral service. One of Hannah’s close friends, Marissa Irakoze posted the following on Instagram,

Before this week, I never knew that joy and grief could be in the same place. Hannah, your service yesterday was incredible. You would have LOVED it. You lived such a beautiful life, it was an honor to have known you. See you soon, friend ❤️

The service was Christ centered celebration of life. While the service was a time to grieve, yet also a time to rejoice. We grieved that she is gone, and we don’t get to enjoy her presence anymore on this side of heaven. We rejoiced in the victory that Christ secured for us over death on the cross. We have victory through his death and resurrection. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!!!

The House of Mourning is Better

Another close family friend, Heidi Griffith shared a wonderful verse in Ecclesiastes that the Lord used to minister to Heidi when her mother passed away. We found it touched us as well, and I feel it’s a passage we will be chewing on and thinking through for a long time.

“It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.”

Ecclesiastes 7:2 ESV

It’s hard to understand how it can be better to mourn than to feast, but there it is. We are finding that the Lord is meeting us in a deep and profound way through the pain that we are enduring. God is present in this trial. He has not abandoned us. He will never leave us or forsake us.

Hannah with her brothers, Jonathan & David

Hannah with her brothers, Jonathan & David

Hannah’s brothers, David and Jonathan put in over 24 hours creating a beautiful slide show. They chose two songs from Rachel Platten that Hannah loved, and that carry a deep significance. The boys shared during the service that the first song, Better Place, speaks of how  Hannah made the world a better place from the moment that she entered this world to the moment that the Lord took her home. Several Friends shared that Hannah would not waste any time to show her love and would make you feel special the very first time you met her. The boys also shared that, Hannah touched many lives on this world and we are confident that her Impact and testimony will outlive her by continuing to bring those still on earth to a relationship with Christ.  Most importantly an assurance that the Lord has given us  is that Hannah is now in a better place. The second song, Fight Song, is a remembrance of Hannah’s fighting spirit. She was and is a princess warrior.

I Hate Saying Good-bye

The Diaso Family at the border – with the U.S./Mexico border fence in the background

One of the most difficult things about being a missionary is saying good-bye to family and all the people we love. It’s something that Dawn and I have been doing for more than 25 years, but it never gets easier.

I can remember weeping when I first said good-bye to my grandparents, my parents, my brothers and my friends those many years ago.

Good-bye Jonny Boy
Dave with Jonathan

Dave with Jonathan

Today (Sunday) my second born son, Jonathan got on a plane and flew back to Colorado. I like to call him Jonny Boy.

The Lord gave us a wonderful visit!

I am thankful that we do have such a close and loving family. We aren’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but we do love and care for each other.

All three of our children, David Jr., Jonathan and Hannah get along very well. It’s a real gift from the Lord to see them together.

Having some fun!

Having some fun on the border!

Dawn and I give thanks that our kids are as close as they are. Thank you Jesus for each member in our family.

While Jonathan was here we were able to spend a couple of days in Fresno visiting my parents and one of my brother’s and his family. It was a special time as we aren’t all able to get together very frequently.

It Could be Worse!

When I think about the sadness that we experience in saying good-bye to our family, I recognize that some missionaries live much further away from their children and other family members. Many have it much harder than we do, so I must give thanks for that. On the other hand, I’m not sure that takes away from the ache of saying good-bye.

Dawn and I are very proud of all three of our children. We feel that they are true gifts from the Lord, and it’s always special when we can all be together.

Thanks for Joining Us In Prayer

We appreciate your prayers, and your love and encouragement for us as we continue on this journey. God has called us here. He has a purpose in all of this, and he is doing a good work on the border and the Baja. His purpose is for our whole family not just for Dawn and me. We lean on Him and we trust in Him.

We give thanks for the Lord’s good work, and for his call!

The Gift of Family
David, Hannah and Jon having some fun!

David, Hannah and Jon having some fun!

One of the wonderful things about this time of year is taking some pause to be thankful for the gifts God has given us.

I’m reminded of the gift of my family. I mentioned in some of my recent posts Trials and Tears, and Trials and Tears: Part Two, Answers the challenge we went through with our daughter, Hannah and our son, Jon. I’m grateful to be on the other side of Hannah’s car accident, and Jonathan’s eye surgery.

This last week Hannah has been with us to celebrate Thanksgiving. The first time we’ve had all three kids with us for three years. It’s been wonderful being together.

One of the things that gives Dawn and me great joy is that our kids get along well. They genuinely care for one another.

David & Jonathan – Loving Brothers

David was there to support Jon before and after the surgery. Jonathan was so grateful that he wrote a thank you tribute to David on Facebook. He also added some promo for his brother at the end ;).

Jon said the following about his brother David,

David & Jon have always been close

David & Jon have always been close

I have the most amazing brother in the world. He’s always been there for me when I need him the most. I was discussing with him the other day the blessing of our friendship. All the kind words, the encouragement and the cards that he made me after surgery. He’s amazing! I am so blessed! I love you tiki Brohan! Ladies, he’s a great guy and he won’t be single forever. get on it!

We always prayed that our boys would have a David and Jonathan type relationship. God has blessed us with two wonderful young men who love Jesus and look out for one another.

Actually all three of the kids get along very well. Dawn and I feel very blessed.

Praise God for His Renewing Work

I give thanks to the Lord for working in the heart of David, Jon and Hannah. His grace has entered in and transformed their lives. The renewing work of the gospel is evident as they grow in Christ.

Dave, Hannah and Dawn

Dave, Hannah and Dawn

I also praise the Lord for giving me such a wonderful wife, who put her heart and soul into raising three children who love the Lord. I know that they wouldn’t have turned out as well without her labor of love!

My kids are still a work in progress like each of us, but God is committed to completing what he started in them . I love the promise the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 1:6,

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

This gives me great hope, in a world that seeks to knock us down!

Thanksgiving Amidst the Trials
Hannah & David at the airport when Hannah arrived for her surprise visit!

Hannah & David at the airport when Hannah arrived for her surprise visit!

The Lord says he stores up our tears in a bottle. This gives me comfort knowing that he cares deeply about our pain.

Last week I wrote about some of the pain that our family and some friends of ours endured. if you missed it you can read about it here Trials & Tears!, and Trials & Tears: Part Two, Answers.

This week especially we focus on the many blessings that God has given us, and it truly has been a better week.

My daughter, Hannah, who was in a bad car accident last week is here with us to celebrate Thanksgiving. My son, Jon, who had an emergency eye surgery last Friday is recovering. It will be a while before he gains full use of his right eye, but the surgery was successful. We give much thanks for that, and we continue praying for a full and complete recovery.

God Uses Ana’s Pain to Bring Adam to Christ!

The same creative and powerful God who made the beauty of the Sunset cares for you and me!

Our friend, Ana who was detained last week was set free last Friday. She is now back with her family!

Ana made a wrong turn last week when she was taking a friend’s son to school. That wrong turn led to her being detained.

The father of the boy Ana was taking to school is named, Adam. After all that happened last week Adam came to church last Sunday with Ana and her family. He heard the gospel, and he gave his life to Christ. God works in mysterious ways, doesn’t he? Yet, he is always working, and doing so in such a way that he gets the glory.

We don’t always understand the reasons why, or the how’s, but we can trust that he is working.

The Lord cares for you. He tells us he will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He says that the plans he has for us are good (Jeremiah 29:11). He encourages us to ask him for our needs, for even a father will give his child a piece of bread when he asks for it (Matthew 7:9).

Aren’t those wonderful and encouraging promises? We just need to lean on him and trust him.

Lift Our Voices in Thanks to Our God

Lord, I praise you that, because of you we have much to be thankful for. Thank you for hearing our prayers. Thank you for giving us friends and family to love!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to you my friend!

The Lord Hears our Prayers

Today (Friday) was a much better day than Thursday!

The Lord wipes our tears away. He promises to be near the brokenhearted.

Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears… The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! (Psalms 34:3-4, 7-8, ESV)

God Answers for Jon

Thanks for praying for our friends and our family. Jonathan’s surgery went very well. Jon’s doctor gave us this wonderful news after he came out of the operation room.

We feel very relieved and we give praise to the Lord for his care for our son. He’s uncomfortable as he recovers, but that is normal after the type of surgery he had.

We won’t know for about a month how successful the surgery was in improving his vision. It’s hard to wait, but we trust. Please join us in calling out to our Lord in asking for his complete healing work.

The Lord Cares for Hannah

Jon & Hannah

Hannah is feeling sore from her accident, and she had a good day today. She is on her way to recovery!

We still have things to sort out with the insurance company, but things are definitely moving in the right direction. Pray for wisdom and favor with the insurance adjuster as Hannah interacts with them about repairing the damages that she suffered.

God Comes Through for Ana

Another encouraging answer to prayer is that our friend, Ana who had been detained since Tuesday morning was released on Friday. She is now back with her family. Her family is overjoyed! We join them in giving thanks.

God’s hand is in all of this, and we praise him as we look to him to lead us.

Praise the Lord that his mercies are new every morning. Thank the Lord for a new day. Thank him that he lifts us up when we are down.

What a day! What a week!
Hannah, Dawn and Dave in TJ

Hannah, Dawn and Dave in TJ

When we live in this crazy world, and maybe even more so when we are on the front lines we get attacked.

Earlier this week a friend of ours, who is a wonderful Christian woman. She’s a great wife and mother. Dawn and I have grown to love them. Well, she took a wrong turn as she was taking her nephew to school, and ended up in a detention center.

Her husband has already spent thousands of dollars in lawyers fees trying to get every thing sorted out.

When I received the news on Tuesday of what happened I felt very sad. Tears welled up in my eyes, although I was with other friends so I held it in.

I feel for those that get hurt through the brokenness on the border. That’s one of the reasons God brought us here. To bring good news to the poor, and to repair the broken city.

Family Trials
my daughter Hannah's car

my daughter Hannah’s poor car

Today (Thursday) I felt like the enemy was coming after my family full on.

My daughter, Hannah called me at 6:30 in the morning, because she got stuck in the snow and ice. Someone ran into her, then another and another. When it was all over there were five cars involved in the accident.

Hannah was cold and afraid. I tried to keep her calm and give her hope. I know that our Lord protected her from further damage.

Then about when I was done helping Hannah, I got a call from Dawn that our son, Jonathan had a serious problem with his eye. His retina is detached.

Jon, Hannah & David Jr. having some fun

Jon, Hannah & David Jr. having some fun

The doctor wants to do an emergency surgery, but since my son ate lunch before he received this news, and they need to perform the surgery after 8 hours of fasting he decided to put the surgery off until Friday morning. Again I found myself sad, and the tears welled up.

My son, Jon will have an emergency eye surgery to repair his retina on Friday morning at 7:20 AM PST.

Someone once said that dogs don’t bark at parked cars. I do believe that one of the attacks our enemy uses is to try to discourage us while we are serving the Lord. I’m not sure that knowing that makes it any easier. It’s still painful to see those we love suffer.

God Gives me Hope

What does give me hope is knowing that somehow, someway God uses this for his glory and for our good. I’m reminded to keep my eyes on him.

Jesus said that, in this world you will have many troubles, but cheer up I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

After I sent a note out to some friends today asking them to pray, a pastor friend sent me some encouraging verses, so I thought I would share them with you, and ask you to pray.

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV84)
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV84)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Thanks for joining us on this journey of faith, and for standing with us in prayer.

David Jr. celebrating Mexican Independence day with Dawn and Dave in Mexico City

David Jr. celebrating Mexican Independence day with Dawn and Dave in Mexico City

Last night Dawn and I were reminiscing with David and Jonathan about some of the experiences our kids had in Mexico City. David Jr. wrote this story about a night of adventure, that the Lord used to strengthen the faith of my young family. I love the way David tells the story!

Car Troubles in Mexico City

My mother always reminds me of a story of our time spent in Mexico. It was late and dark as my mom drove through a very poor and equally dangerous part of Mexico City on Donceles road. The only light came from the high beams of our van. Sitting in the back seats were my six-year-old little brother Jon, my four-year-old sister Hannah and seven-year old me. We were making our way back home from a dinner at a friend’s house when the van suddenly hit a boulder-sized pothole and the van came to a screeching halt. Our tires were blown out. Hannah started bawling in her car seat, while Jon and I just sat there confused.

“Mommy what’s happening?” I asked, “Why aren’t we moving?”

My mother was obviously freaking out as she was shaking and busted into immediate prayer mode, but was trying her best to keep her calm for us. She wondered what to do. We were in the worst part of Mexico to be stuck in. I could tell mom was getting worried so I suggested, “Mommy let’s sing,”

“Sweetie I’m not really in the mood to sing right now” my mom responded. Obviously I disagreed. I had one of those musical books that play a song when you push the button.

“Come on mommy we’ll all be happy if we just sing . . . John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, his name is my name too…” Tears began to roll down her face.

“Mommy are you okay? Are we going to die?” I asked timidly.  Confident that I could cheer her up, I exclaimed, “Don’t worry mommy! Remember Daniel in the lion’s den? We just need to have faith and pray!”

Jon, Hannah & David Jr. having some fun

Jon, Hannah & David Jr. having some fun

My mom looked back at us with a warm smile and thanked me for being so brave. She began praying as I piped in one last time.

“Mommy just in case we die, we should pray with Hannah because she doesn’t know God. And remember to pray in Spanish so she’ll understand us.” After a few hours of being stranded, God answered our prayers. A man came up to us and offered us his cell phone to call our mechanic Jorge.

I enjoy listening to this story from David Jr’s perspective. The missionary life isn’t always an easy one, and living in the largest city in the world was not a walk in the park. You might remember the experience I shared a few months ago about being kidnapped in Mexico. Yet, God took care of us. He taught us to trust him even in the midst of trials. It’s a lesson we continue to learn as we minister here on the border.

Jon and Dave embarking on the cross country trip from Colorado Springs to Chula Vista

Jon and Dave embarking on the cross-country trip from Colorado Springs to Chula Vista

I’ve been on the road the last week, which has made it harder to get on the internet to post anything. Last Thursday I flew out to Colorado to help our son, Jonathan move to Chula Vista.

I can still remember the tears and the pain of saying good-bye to Jonathan and Hannah last August! God is so good to provide a way for Jonathan to be with us again.

One of the difficulties of living out the life of a missionary is all the painful good-byes. You keep thinking that it might get easier, but it doesn’t, at least not for me.

The Lord has put us in the wonderfully unique situation of living and serving in missions on the border. Because of where we live we can minister on both sides of the border. In two different countries with two radically varied cultures. This makes it possible for us to be closer to our grown children. It’s an opportunity many missionaries do not have.

In Jeremiah the Lord encouraged the Israelites to seek the welfare of the city where they had been sent. As God blessed the city they too would be blessed. That is really our heart here. We pray that we will see San Diego – Tijuana blessed by God. We trust as the Lord showers down his blessings on the city that our family and friends will experience God’s rich and bountiful care as well.

God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:7 & 11, gives us comfort and hope:

Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find welfare… For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jon & Hannah right before we began our trek

Jon & Hannah right before we began our trek

Dawn and I love what we do, and we love where we live. It affords us the opportunity to minister to Latinos in San Diego and in Tijuana. God has given us some great partners to work with. We continue to pray that the Lord’s kingdom will be expanded on the border as it is in heaven.

“Thank you Jesus for calling us to serve on the border! Thank you for making it possible for our son, Jon to move so he can be near us. We pray for your watchful care over our whole family. Thank you that we can trust you!”

Dawn and I have been in Colorado Springs for the last week. We came out for some ministry meetings, and the opportunity to connect with friends and family.

When we left Mexico City at the end of 1999 we moved to Colorado Springs. We thought our family would only be in the Springs for a year or so. I remember Dawn saying to me, “It’s cold there, and we don’t know anybody.” I replied, “We’ll only be there for about a year, we can handle it.”

Well, we actually lived in Colorado Springs for 12 years, just slightly more than a year, right? 🙂 I guess, that’s one reason we are having a hard time getting our kids to leave Colorado. It really did become home for us.

The Lord called us to the Mexican border and we left Colorado last August. Mexico has bookended our time in Colorado.

Hannah and Dave enjoying some father - daughter time

While we lived in the Springs the Lord gave us many wonderful friends. We are grateful for them. They pray for us and encourage us along the way.

Dawn and I will be leaving on Wednesday morning, and it will be very hard to say good-bye. It always is! It makes it even harder when we have to say to good-bye to two of our children, Jonathan and Hannah.

I thank the Lord that he has given us such a fruitful visit, and for the blessing of friends who love and support us in our ministry.
