Last week was a very productive week of mobilizing for our work on the San Diego – Tijuana border. We started the week in Atlanta at Mission to the World’s vision retreat. We met a number of people there who are asking the question, where might God want me to serve? Then we headed up to Lookout Mountain, Georgia where we met with students and faculty at Covenant College. We ended the week at Biola’s global missions conference.

Biola and Global Missions

Biola University held their missions conference this last week. They called the conference Outpouring. Since Dawn and I were out-of-town earlier in the week we were only able to attend on Friday.

Unfortunately, on our way up to Biola, which is in Southern Los Angeles we encountered a huge traffic jam leaving San Diego. Even though we left at 6:00 AM there was an early morning traffic accident that closed down the 805 freeway.

I must say that I did get a little impatient. Believe it or not I have not yet mastered patiently waiting in traffic when I feel that we need to be somewhere! 😉 I’m hoping it’s not something I get too much experience in.

Despite the slow down we did make it to the conference, just a little later than we hoped we would.

Dawn and I had a good day at Biola. Even though we were only participated on the last day of the conference, it was a fruitful time. We connected with some students that are exploring opportunities to go on mission with God. The students are especially interested in summer internships.

We love the opportunity to invest in the lives of young people. Who knows what the Lord will do when we plant and water for his kingdom?

Biola put on a big conference which attracted a number of students and other missions organizations. It was enjoyable to connect with new and old friends from the other missions organizations. They have some great ideas, so we can learn from them.

Praise to God for a Fruitful Week

In all, it was a very fruitful week. Dawn and I love connecting with people, especially those that have a heart for the world. There are already some students that have talked to us about a summer internship. We are also following up with a few young families that are interested in pursuing a longer term of service on the mission field.

Pray for Workers

God is moving on the border, and he is opening doors for us to walk through. Thank you Jesus, continue to guide and lead. Bring us those workers that you want to serve with us!

David Jr., Dawn and I spent the day at Covenant College. We wanted to connect with students and professors to make them aware of opportunities on the border.

God’s Rich Blessings!

We met some outstanding students, and a good number of them showed interest in going on a journey with Jesus in mission. We were encouraged by our visit. Thank you Jesus!

Personally, I find that it energizes me to be with college students. They are willing to try new things, to take risks and they want to make a difference. These students give me hope, that God has something special in store for them and for us in the future.

I loved the opportunity to connect with the professors as well. They expressed a great deal of enthusiasm about what we are doing. One of them told me he was glad that we were continuing to minister on the border, because he wasn’t sure if Mission to the World was continuing to work there. I left feeling very pumped up and encouraged!

While at the school we made plans for a return visit in the fall. When we return I will have the opportunity to teach in a couple of the classes on campus!

Friends on the Campus

An added bonus for all of us was seeing some of our friends that attend Covenant. Most of them were family friends that we first met in Colorado Springs, but we also saw students we knew from Pennsylvania and California. It’s so good to see them growing up, and maturing.

One of our special friends is Susanna Griffith. We know her and her family from Colorado. We were able to enjoy a couple of meals, and some good southern barbecue with her. Susanna will be graduating in May. She is the student body president, and has been a real leader and a positive influence on the campus.

Lord, thank you for going before us, and giving us a good day. I have great hopes that from among these students you are going to raise up some godly leaders, and that some of them will join us on the border!

Picture of our present display – What do you think we should change?

I’m trying to upgrade how we communicate and appeal to those in their twenties or early thirties. One of the things I’m doing to connect with students and beyond is visiting colleges, seminaries and churches. I have a display that needs to be updated. That’s what I would like your opinion on.

The display has our old logo and name on it, and I’m not sure it does the best job about communicating who we are, and what we are trying to do here.

The Display from a different vantage point

There are four panels on the display that can be changed out. Could you look at the picture of the display on this post, and give me your feedback on how you think I can improve it? For example, what kind of pictures should I include?

Our vision is to see a renewed bi-national city. Renewed socially, spiritually and culturally.

It’s also important to keep in mind where we are ministering. We are on the border in the largest bi-national city and most land crossed border crossing in the world, San Diego – Tijuana.

Isaiah 61:1,2, 4 is a passage that speaks to our mission on the border.

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound… They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.” (ESV)

I’d love to hear from you. Let me know what type of pictures and what short relevant message we can use to communicate well with those in their 20’s and 30’s?

Also, Dawn and I appreciate your prayers that the Lord would raise up faithful and loving, God-fearers who would be willing to join on this journey with Jesus.
