God’s Good Work in Colima

Dawn and I are returning from a trip to Colima and Guadalajara as I write this. It was so good to be with the pastors and church planters that we are working with in these two cities. (I decided to repost this, because I accidentally posted it late at night the first time). It was so good to be in Colima and also to see all that the Lord has done and is doing in Colima and in Guadalajara.

Pastor Jose Luis and Mariel Rodriguez have a beautiful young family with 2 young boys. Mariel’s mom was also visiting while we were there. It was a real joy to visit Colima for the first time. Colima is about 2 1/2 hour drive south of Guadalajara.

Jose Luis and Mariel are involved in a turnaround church or a replant. I’ve heard people say that when you start a church it’s starting from zero, but when you replant it’s like starting from minus zero. It’s a difficult task, but there is a huge need for revitalization in many churches in Mexico. Churches that have stagnated or dwindled in size and lack life and vision.

I started working with Jose Luis and Mariel about three years ago. They have been eager to learn and make the necessary changes to turn things around. That’s one of the most difficult issues that these churches face, is a willingness to change and do things differently.

Puerta de Salvación church, “Door of Salvation” is now growing and attracting young families. It’s good to see how the Lord is working and bringing life.

While Dawn and I were in Colima we were able we were able to meet some of the people in the church. Jose Luis was very vulnerable with them and shared how we helped him not only with strategy for turning the church around, but also in strengthening his marriage. He mentioned how most pastors in Mexico don’t have someone to mentor and coach them. It was affirming to hear him share how the Lord had used us to help them in both their personal life and in their ministry.

It was very gratifying to see how God is bringing transformation to the people in Puerta de Salvación. Please, pray for Jose Luis and Mariel as they train leaders and continue to reach out into the community. Pray as well that they can build a solid foundation as God grows the church.

Celebrating 25 years of Growth
Pastor Kenton Wood and his wife, Adriana with the other pastors of their daughter churches

After our time in Colima, Dawn and I went to Guadalajara to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rey de Reyes church, “King of Kings. It was a special time to celebrate all that God has done through their ministry. They’ve planted 5 other churches besides the mother church in the last 25 years. It was a wonderful time to praise God for his good work through these churches.

I know that frequently the news coming out about what’s going on in Mexico isn’t very encouraging. The vast majority of people in Mexico are awesome. They are a beautiful people and culture that Dawn and I have come to love. Despite the bad news, God is doing a marvelous work as he builds his church in Mexico and beyond!

Kingdom Expansion in Mexico
Worship at Rey de Reyes Church in Guadalajara

Last week I wrote about how the church is experiencing explosive growth on the Big Island. More than 7,000 people have come to Christ in one city through one church planting network. It’s amazing and it’s also exciting!

The ground is not quite as fertile in Mexico, but we continue to pray and work for the expansion of the kingdom. We started a church this summer in memory of my parents, which has been a wonderful highlight for us. Also, as we coach and train church planters throughout Mexico we are seeking to set them up so that they will be successful, and grow healthy, vibrant churches.

Recently Dawn and I took four church planting couples to Guadalajara to equip them so that they will have new ideas and more opportunities for success. It was an amazing time. Many of the church planters had never met one another before, so just the connections and fellowship was valuable. Also, we were able to visit four churches that are in various stages of the church planting process. One of church is just getting ready to launch this Sunday, November 21. One that has seen a lot of growth, and maturity, but is still working on being formally recognized as an organized church. Two churches that are organized, and are starting other churches.

It was like a dream come true to see the church planters so involved in learning from people who have already successfully passed through some of the same steps that they are going through now. The pandemic has created some obstacles for growth, but it also opens up some new opportunities.

Learning together in Guadalajara

Dawn and my prayer is that the church planters that went to Guadalajara with us will take what they learned and begin to implement the things that would fit in their context. This will help their churches to grow, and to be healthy.

We believe as the gospel goes forth that it will bring about transformation. First to individuals, then to families, then to communities which will go on to be an influence in the city and even in the world. This is our hope and prayer. I realize they are lofty goals, but the gospel can bring about life transformation, and city transformation.

God is on the move. He loves His church and He desires that the church grow. We are a city set on a hill. A light that shines into the darkness.

Dawn and I give thanks for opportunities like this to grow with others. We loved getting to know these families. Just wonderful people. We trust that the Lord will do a great and mighty work in and through them. Hallelujah!

Extend Your Hands to Help!

You can help through prayer and through a financial gift to support church planting in Mexico.

Dawn and I also ask you to consider making a donation today to help our familia on the Big Island. Sadly, the crisis is ongoing and it has only gotten worse as time has gone on. Not only is there a lack of food and basic goods, but the prices are skyrocketing and they are having to stand in long lines for hours at a time to get the little food that is available. We are thankful that we can be an instrument to bless others, and we’d love for you to join us in this effort of offering food to the hungry, and drink to the thirsty.

God is Growing His Church in Mexico

Dawn and I are grateful that we are connected to a larger mission that works in many cities in Mexico and beyond. You might remember that we began our ministry with Mission to the World (MTW) in Mexico City back in 1990. That was also the year that our oldest son, David Jr. was born. As we pray and work towards the growth of the church, and for changed lives it’s exciting to be able to visit and encourage our missionaries and to see all the Lord is doing through them. One of the cities we recently visited was Guadalajara.

Precious Servants & Friends

Our good friends, Matt & Esta Jesch with their son, Mateo

Guadalajara is a beautiful city with many needs for the gospel. MTW missionaries have been working in this great city for more than 20 years. It gave Dawn and me great joy to spend some time with Matt and Esta Jesch, who arrived in Guadalajara about three years ago. They are wonderful servants of the Lord, who we’ve grown to love as we’ve gotten to know them. They actually flew out to support us when our daughter, Hannah died.

Matt and Esta have many gifts and they have amazing hearts to work alongside our churches to reach out and come alongside people in need. This includes job training and mercy ministries. We love being with them, they are some of our favorite people.

Church Growth in Acapulco & Guadalajara

Kenton & Adriana Wood with Dawn and Dave in front of Rey de Reyes Church

One of MTW’s missionaries who has had the most success not only in Mexico, but in all of Latin America is Kenton Wood. Kenton’s parents were missionaries when he was a child. They served in the Acapulco area. Unfortunately, when Kenton was still young both of his parents were tragically killed in an airplane accident. Even with this tremendous tragedy, and challenge Kenton’s love for Mexico and the people of Mexico has not waned.

He planted a church in Acapulco in the 80’s. Then in the mid-90’s he moved to Guadalajara to begin his church planting work with his wife, Karen. The church, Rey de Reyes has grown to 900, and they have started four other churches in Guadalajara and other cities in Mexico.

Kenton has experienced some challenges in his life, but he’s been resilient and continued to serve faithfully. Not only did he lose his parents when he was young, but his wife, Karen passed away about 5 years ago. She had cancer. The Lord has sustained Kenton and his family through all these trials.

Dawn and I were so encouraged to share a meal with Kenton and his lovely wife, Adriana who now serves alongside him in the church, Rey de Reyes. God is so good, and takes care of His children. First we visited the church, and saw all the various ministries and how the Lord is using them. It brought us joy to see the vision and creativity for reaching the lost with the good news of Christ.

I give thanks for all that the Lord is doing in Guadalajara. Pray for the church to grow and that even more churches will be started, even more lives will be transformed by the gospel. We pray that we can replicate more churches and healthy churches throughout Mexico and beyond!
