One of the many things I love about Harbor church is the love for hurting people that is demonstrated from week to week. The church bridges cultures and people from different economic backgrounds. Some of the people in the church are struggling to make a living.

One of the people who has fallen on difficult times is Al. He is a big, loving and caring guy. You might even say he’s like a big teddy bear.

Every year Harbor has an outreach to the city called Christmas in City Heights. Through this ministry low-income families have the opportunity to purchase at a very reduced price gifts for their children. The goal is to allow for the working poor families to have a dignified and financially affordable Christmas. Over 100 families were touched by this outreach. Many non-Christians helped serve, and were served.

My friend Danny Kim put together a video of Al’s testimony. He felt like the church had given him so much that he had to share what he had. God touched him and put it on his heart to give about 20 teddy bears for the Christmas in City Heights outreach. He had collected these for about 20 years. Al was making a big sacrifice in giving up his teddy bear collection. It reminds us of the widow’s mite that Christ said was the greatest gift. An awesome testimony of God’s grace!

Rejoice with me over how God is reaching down and changing lives! Rejoice in the Christ of Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Dave

The next two Saturdays we will work with our good friend, Daniel Nuñez and Lo Mejor del Trigo (The Best of the Wheat) to build a new church building for Daniel’s 17th church plant. His vision is to plant 50 churches in 20 years! This is the second church plant that Harbor has partnered with Daniel on.

It’s been so encouraging to see what the Lord has done in Rosarito through the first church plant. I’m thrilled that we are on the border, and that we can participate directly in this new work!

This video that our talented friend, Danny Kim put together features some of the highlights from the Rosarito church plant.

“Lord, we do pray that there will be many more churches, and that the city of Tijuana will be transformed as people are won to Christ, and the gospel is powerfully proclaimed. Amen!”

Pastor Leo Navarez receiving the keys to the new church

In my last few posts I’ve written about the new church plant in Rosarito, Mexico led by our friends, pastor Daniel Nuñez and pastor Leo Navarez. Daniel is the leader of Lo Mejor del Trigo (The Best of the Wheat) movement in Tijuana and beyond. Leo is the pastor of the church in Rosarito, which is Lo Mejor del Trigo’s 14th church! Praise the Lord for how He is moving through this ministry.

As I’ve thought about this church plant it’s reminded me of the kingdom of God. It’s reminded me of Jesus teaching on how the kingdom of God grows. In part it’s a mystery. It’s something God does as the gospel goes forth. The kingdom of heaven is a powerful and dynamic movement of the Spirit.

Jesus said in His teachings in Matthew 13:31-32,

“… The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in it branches.”

The kingdom of heaven is a beautiful thing. The Lord brings together sometimes unrelated parts to bring about expansive growth. If we look, if we pay attention, we can see the seed scattered. Then we begin to see these smallest of seeds bear fruit. They grow into something big and unexpected.

Some of the things I’m already seeing even as the church in Rosarito just celebrated their first service this past Sunday are:

  1. Pastor Leo remembering that his family owned some land in Rosarito, and realizing they could use that land to build the church.
  2. The Lord bringing two ministries together – Harbor Presbyterian Church and Lo Mejor del Trigo to plant this church.
  3. A mexican woman, Billy, at Harbor Mid-City who saw the video that Danny Kim put together. She got so excited, because she has family that live in Rosarito. She planned to invite all of them to the church. I’m anxious to hear what happened. How many came?
  4. A friend from one of our supporting churches just wrote me when he saw my letter about the new church in Rosarito. He said their church has been involved in a ministry to build homes for the homeless in Rosarito, but they didn’t have a church to connect them with. This new church could be an answer!
  5. Only time will tell of all the wonderful things that the Lord will do through this church. I’m thrilled to see all these different moving parts come together. Small seed growing!

I love the way God works, so encouraging to watch. Tell me, how have you seen God at work? How have you seen Him take something small, the smallest seed to bear much fruit?

Let’s Praise Him together for His mighty work!

P.S. I’d appreciate your prayers as we do prayer walks this week and next week in San Diego and Tijuana. Pray the Lord will give us His eyes to see!

Our friend, Stephen Phelan leading Harbor Mid-City in communion a great Christian practice where we remember Christ death until He returns

In my last post I wrote about the new church plant in Rosarito, Mexico. We are celebrating that they will be holding their first church service in the new building this Sunday.

I was with Stephen Phelan, pastor of Harbor Mid City recently, and he shared a wonderful story of redemption with me. Harbor partnered with Lo Mejor del Trigo to plant the new church.

Harbor Mid City showed the video that Danny Kim put together. I’m including it below. After the service one of the Mexican women from the church came up to Stephen. Her name is “Billy”. She was very excited she said, “pastor Stephen a number of people from my family live in Rosarito, and I’m going to invite them to come visit the church.” Wow, it’s so good to see the Lord at work!

Here’s the video on the Harbor – Lo Mejor Del Trigo church plant:

Let’s join Billy in prayer for her friends and family members that live in Rosarito. Pray that they will visit the church and come to know Jesus.

I love this cross-border kingdom connection. God is not bound by borders! He works through families and friends to see the gospel go forth.

Daniel Nuñez and Ray Call on land before the church was built

This Sunday Lo Mejor de Trigo (The Best of the Wheat) will hold their first church service in Rosarito, Mexico. Pastor Leo Navarez will lead the church in their new building.

We are excited with them, because it represents new life and being a light for the gospel in Rosarito! We are also enthused because Harbor Presbyterian Church helped pastor Daniel Nuñez and pastor Leo Navarez to build the church.

We are praying that this Sunday, June 3rd will be a great time of celebration! Join us in prayer that the Lord uses pastor Leo, and the ministry of Lo Mejor del Trigo to be a blessing to their community.

This is the 13th church that Daniel has planted with Lo Mejor del Trigo. It’s the first one that Harbor Presbyterian has partnered with them to plant. We pray that it is the first of many!

Check out the video that Danny Kim put together on the Harbor – Lo Mejor del Trigo project. You will see the finished product, and some of those involved.
