The Inaugural Church Service

Pastor Daniel Nuñez leading us in a time of prayer and commissioning for Mere & Edna.

On Sunday Dawn and I had the great joy of participating in the inaugural service of the new church in Mexicali that was built in Hannah’s memory. This church holds a special place in our hearts for many reasons. The more obvious reason is that we built it as a living memorial for our daughter, Hannah! It’s also special, because of all the friends and churches that pitched in to make this a reality. There were well over 50 that helped from the US and some more that gave in Mexico.

The Lord has raised up a special couple to lead this church, Pastor Mere and his wife, Edna. We didn’t really know them before we began this project, but we’ve quickly grown to love them. They are a gifted young couple, and they have a deep love for the Lord.

The Lord Brings All the Loose Ends Together

I found it interesting that when Mere was young he attended church with his good friend Abraham Velazquez. Abraham’s father was the pastor of this church. Then as they got older they both attended a church started by Ministerios Transformación and pastored by our good friend, Jaime Rodriguez. From there Abraham who is a gifted worship leader and pastor began to minister with Pastor Daniel Nuñez.

Eventually, Abraham and his wife Martha began to lead the church in Rojo Gomez. This church has grown significantly and is one of the few churches in Tijuana that has a second service. They are making a huge difference in the community.

Wow! It’s so wonderful to see all these connections. Each one of these people is very special to us. All of these friends were able to be there on Sunday, except for Pastor Abraham.

A Special Service – The First Service!

Mexicali starts getting hot in April and May, and it was 105 on Sunday. That is hot! We prayed that the air conditioning would be installed by Sunday, and the Lord graciously answered our request.

The first service is always special since there is only one first and it’s the start of something new and exciting. I love being a part of bringing the gospel through the bride of Christ, his church to a new community. Dawn and I pray that there will be many more churches that we can play a part in planting not only along the border but throughout Mexico and beyond.

Of course, now there is much work to be done in this new community. Pray with us for Pastor Mere and Edna. They need wisdom, encouragement, and stamina as the Lord works through them. We’ve seen time and time again that servants of God going into new territory become targets. The enemy attacks and they need much prayer covering for protection. We want them to stay strong as a couple and as a family.

Thanks for Standing With Us!

We give thanks for all of you who have prayed, given and cheered on along the way! We give thanks to the Lord for this living memorial for Hannah. I was feeling down the other day, missing my daughter and a friend reminded me that this church is a living memorial and it represents what was important to her and that the Lord will use it for His glory to impact the lives of others.

One my ongoing prayers since Hannah moved to heaven is that her death wouldn’t be in vain, and I understand that it isn’t because of all of the Lord’s wonderful promises. Yet, I wanted to see some tangible evidence. This is one of those things, and I believe there will many more.

Thank you for standing with us on this long, joyous and sometimes painful journey!

An Exciting Time!
The amazing group we took down to Mexicali to build the church in Hannah’s memory

The amazing group we took down to Mexicali to build the church in Hannah’s memory

This is an exciting time of year for us. A little over a week ago we finished building the church in Hannah’s memory in Mexicali, Mexico. That was a huge accomplishment for us, and we are so grateful the Lord provided the way and the people to pull that off! 34 people from the US joined us and another 30 from Mexico participated. Dawn, David, Jonathan and I are still in awe over all the love we were shown as we built this church. Thank you Jesus!

Pastor Mere and Edna

Pastor Mere and Edna

We are getting ready for the inauguration of the church with Pastor Mere Godinez and his wife, Edna on May 6th. Our family is so grateful for Pastor Mere and Edna. They are wonderful young ministers of the gospel. God is already working and moving in the community in Mexicali where we are planting this church.

Time to Celebrate

Celebrating 3 years with Pastor Victor Bravo and his wife, Sol. Wonderful friends!

This past Sunday we celebrated the 3 year anniversary of a church that we helped start with Ministerios Transformación in Rosarito, Mexico. Pastor Victor Bravo and his wife, Sol have done an excellent job planting the church and reaching out in the community. They are creative and very active and the Lord is using them to make a difference. It was so good to celebrate with them. Victor and Sol along with the church honored the part that we played in helping to start the church by recognizing us during the service. It was an encouragement to receive their demonstration of love and appreciation.

I had the opportunity to preach at the church in Rosarito on Sunday. It was a special day. We rejoice in what the Lord is doing through this church. The church was filled with many joyous people. The worship leaders for the service was a Christian mariachi band. Mariachi music is traditional Mexican music that tends to be sung with a lot of energy and emotion. Viva Mexico! Gloria a Dios!

God’s Healing Work!

The time was also special because we met a 15 year old friend, Michele who had leukemia. We had been praying for Michele along with her family and the church. The last time we visited the church we prayed with her parents Salvador and Miroslava and the Lord broke through and began to heal Michele. I’d like to write more about what God did and is doing in the life of this family in the near future.

We pray for more. More Lord! Keep it coming. More people coming to Christ. More people growing in their faith. More hunger and growth. O Lord, hear our prayer and do your mighty work!

An Amazing Day!
The Hannah Diaso Memorial Church just outside of Mexicali, Mexico

The Hannah Diaso Memorial Church just outside of Mexicali, Mexico

I find it next to impossible to fully express our experience in building the memorial church for our daughter, Hannah. It was wonderful, but it also brought a wide range of emotions.

I felt sad and happy, I felt sorrow and joy, I felt grief and hopeful. On top of all those emotions, I also felt a sense of pride that we could build the church in a community just outside of Mexicali, Mexico. I felt very loved by all those who participated. The Lord gave us about 60 in all counting those that came from both sides of the border.

So Much Love!

Many participated in building the church on a hot day just outside of Mexicali, Mexico

At the end of the first day, I told one of our Mexican friends, Sol Carrola how much it meant to me that she came all the way from Tijuana to help us build the church. We helped Sol and her husband, Victor to build a now thriving church in Rosarito three years ago. I’m going to be preaching at their three-year anniversary celebration service this Sunday.

I told Sol that I felt very loved that she was helping out, and as I expressed my gratitude I started to cry. She told me that they did love us, and wanted my family and me to feel loved. I started crying even more. God is so good to us!

Thankful for All Who Joined Us!
Jonathan & David working hard on the church

Jonathan & David working hard on the church

Both David and Jonathan, our two boys were able to fly out to be with us and help us build the church. Also David’s girlfriend, Emily and Jonathan’s girlfriend, Hannah joined in the fun. Chivis, our close friend from Mexico City, who was one of Hannah’s closest friends flew out to join us. Jim DeWitt a close friend, and also a colleague with Mission to the World made the trip from Michigan to show his love and support. Marissa, who Hannah knew from Colorado came from St. Louis.

My 82-year-old dad got on a plane and came down from Fresno. When my dad told me he was coming I about started crying. When I told Dawn and the boys that grandpa was coming they cried as well. It’s a miracle that my dad could be with us. Last year on March 1 or thereabouts I received a phone call from my mom telling that the doctor said that my dad only had 6 months to a year to live. God has healed my dad! One of the last doctor’s reports he received, the doctor said that the cancer was regressing. The doctor went on to say that it must be divine intervention because it wasn’t because of anything he had done! God is so good!

Elissa and Dawn along with other friends and family

Elissa and Dawn along with Stephany, Kim, Jonathan, Hannah, and Emily with some of the local children

There were also other close friends that joined us locally. Two of Hannah’s friends from her IMPACT 195 discipleship came, Elissa and Stephany. Some of my best friends from Mexico also joined us.

The Impact and Legacy of Hannah’s Life

Praying for Pastor Mere and his wife, Edna as we gave them the keys to the church!

As we shared at the end of the time and reflected some on Hannah’s life, one of the things that was mentioned over and over was how loving and welcoming Hannah was. Our prayer is that this new church will bring life to the community and that all who come will feel welcome!

Both of my boys have expressed that they would much rather visit this church and remember Hannah than to go out to the cemetery to remember her.

We believe that this is going to be a life-giving church. Our family and those that joined us enjoyed getting to know Pastor Mere and his wife Edna. God is going to use them in a powerful way as they plant this church. Join us in praying for them. The inauguration service for the church will be on Sunday, May 6th.

On behalf of my family, I want to thank all who prayed for us as we prepared for this big project. I want to thank all who gave, and there were many. We give thanks for you, and we give thanks to the Lord!

A New Church is Being Born!

Jonathan and Dave with Pastor Mere Godinez at the new church site near Mexicali, Mexico

It’s hard to believe that it is really happening. After more than a year of praying and working towards this goal. This weekend we will be taking down a group of 33 people to build a church in memory of our daughter, Hannah. Apart from the 33 people, we will be bringing from the US, there will be another 40 of our Mexican friends joining us.

Tonight, my 82-year-old dad arrived, because he wants to be involved. He wants to show his love and support by being present for this important event in the life of my family and in the life of the church in Mexico.

I’m blown away by all the love and support we have received!

Confident of God’s Good Work Through This Church!
One of our goals for 2018 is to build a church in memory of our daughter, Hannah.

Our daughter, Hannah Elizabeth Diaso. Thankful to be able to build a church honoring her memory

This is the 6th church that we’ve helped start with our friends from Ministerios Transformación. The last one we built was finished and inaugurated just one day before Hannah moved to heaven. The pain of our loss put a damper on the joy of seeing a new church started. Unfortunately, that church has struggled, but there is a renewed effort to reach the surrounding community for Christ, so we pray for many open doors.

The other churches that we built we usually only had two or three donors that would give towards the project, but this time we must have had over 50! We’ve had some large gifts, and we’ve just been overwhelmed by the generosity and support we’ve received. I just met with Pastor Daniel Nuñez today, and he told me that the majority of churches in their network of churches gave about $60 USD towards the project, and they gave a total of $1,000 USD. That is a sizeable and sacrificial gift for these churches to make.

We are excited about Pastor Mere Godinez and his wife, Edna as they plant this church. God is going to use them in a significant way to impact the community for Christ.

Cristina with her three children – she prayed for 3 years for this church! God is answering her prayers. Hallelujah!

Jonathan and I felt so lifted up after visiting the church site in February and meeting some of the people involved. One of the people we met was Cristina, who lives next door to the church. It was so encouraging to hear her story, and learn how she had been praying for three years for a church. God is answering her prayer in a big way!

Join Us in Prayer!

Please do pray and join us in prayer as we bring together the final details for this new church. Pray for us as we build the church, and pray for Pastor Mere and Edna as they begin to minister in the community and to show the love of Christ!

Giving Thanks for God’s Good Gifts!
Jonathan, Pastor Mere and Dave

Jonathan, Pastor Mere and Dave

This last Friday I experienced one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. Even though this last year has been hard as my family and I have been mourning Hannah’s moving to heaven, the Lord has blessed us with some exceptional experiences, especially lately.

What made Friday so special?

Two main reasons. First, I spent the whole day with one of my son’s, Jonathan. It’s always a special time when I can be with David and Jonathan. We enjoyed driving out to Mexicali and having wonderful interaction along the way. It encourages me so much to see how Jonathan has grown in his love for Christ since his sister moved to heaven. He could have become bitter and angry at God. Instead he’s pushed into Christ and grown tremendously. This is one of the legacies I feel that Hannah has left. The impact she left on both of her brothers. Thank you, Lord for redeeming the pain of Hannah’s early homegoing!

The Foundation is being Laid
The foundation for the new church in Mexicali, Mexico

The foundation for the new church in Mexicali, Mexico

The second reason is we went to Mexicali to see the foundation being poured for the new church that we are building to honor Hannah. It filled me up to overflowing to see this dream becoming a reality. Thank you, Jesus!

I also enjoyed spending some time with the church planter and his wife. Pastor Mere Godinez and his wife, Edna. Mere and his father-in-law, Rafael were working hard laying the foundation for the church.

Some of the neighbors who are interested in seeing the church built were also there. The church actually is right next to Alfonso and Cristina’s house. They used to live in Tijuana and they attended one of the Ministerios Transformación churches in TJ. That’s what brought about the connection. Alfonso and Cristina moved back to Mexicali and they started praying that the Lord would raise up a church in their community.

Years of Prayer for This New Church
Cristina with her three children - she prayed for 3 years for this church!

Cristina with her three children – she prayed for 3 years for this church!

Cristina told me that she prayed for three years that the Lord would bring a church to the community that they live in, which is just outside of Mexicali. The church is close to an hour from the Mexicali – El Centro border crossing.

I loved learning about how the Lord is already working in this community preparing the people to receive the Word of Life. Cristina said that her mom even felt a number of years ago that the Lord was going to build a church on the land right next to the house. Even though they’ve only lived in the house the last few years, they’ve owned the property for a number of years.

The last church we helped Ministerios Transformación start in Rosarito was built and inaugurated the day before Hannah moved to heaven. That church has struggled some to get going. There have been a number of obstacles, and we’ve felt much opposition there. We know as we move into new communities we are bringing the light into dark places. There is a battle that rages on. We are still praying and hopeful that the church in Rosarito will experience breakthrough and make a difference in the community.

Light in the Darkness

This church in Mexicali represents new hope as Christ shines in a place where there is much need. Pray with us as we work with Pastor Mere, his wife Edna and the ministry of Ministerios Transformación to build this church on the weekend of April 14 and 15.

There is still time to help us build this church. We’ve been given a matching fund as we continue to raise funds for this project. You can give online here.

Thanks so much for standing with us in prayer. Our battle is not against flesh and blood! We give thanks for your love and support you’ve shown us in a number ways as we move forward and continue serving the Lord!

The Walls and Roof Are Up!

Our amazing group who came down to build the church with Pastor Obed Lares and his wife Cesiah on the right

I’ll never cease to be amazed by how much work a group of well-coordinated people can get done in one day!

When we arrived on Saturday in Rosarito to build church number 29 with our friends from Ministerios Transformación only the foundation had been laid. Then by the time we left at the end of the day, all the walls were up and the roof was almost finished. A few stayed later to finish up the roof.

Pastor  Daniel Nuñez and his team had done a great deal of prep work before we arrived. They cut the wood and had it laid out for us, and the difficult pieces had already been put together. Nonetheless, it’s exciting to see how quickly the church goes up in one day.

This last Saturday was a warm and sunny day, so everybody was worn out about mid-day. Our group isn’t used to hammering nails and lifting walls, siding and roofing. When we crossed the border at the end of the day I could see a sense of accomplishment in those that came. After a while as we drove back they got quiet. They were tired. They worked hard, and the Lord used them to help bring light to a new community.

A Labor of Love
Pastor Daniel Nuñez, Dave and Pastor Obed Lares

At the end of the day Pastor Obed Lares said the church would always remember the group through the pictures and be thankful for their labor of love that brought the light of Christ to the community.

Obed and his wife, Cesiah brought their children and their parents and they worked hard at making the midday meal for us and keeping us hydrated.

I always love these days even though I don’t have a background in construction. It lifts up my heart to see so many people come together to work on a lasting initiative. The building is just the beginning, but it gives the church a presence in the community.

The Launch of a New Church

The work is not done. This coming Saturday I will lead another group down and we will put up all the drywall, doors, windows and shingles. Our goal is to finish the church by this coming Saturday the 15th, so they can hold their inaugural service on Sunday, October 16th.

Pastor Obed is thrilled to officially launch the church on the 16th, because on that day he also celebrates his birthday. A double celebration!

It will be a glorious day!

The building is just the beginning, but it’s a good and an important beginning to seeing lives transformed as those in the community encounter Christ.

The church is in a humble community, and the family that lives right next to the church were blessed to have their home built by another ministry, YWAM. I was able to meet the family, and Roberto the man of the house told me they were planning on being the first members of the church. The Lord touched me as I saw Roberto and his family pitch in and work with us in seeing the church built. They also let us use their electricity and their bathroom. Two essentials!

Pray for the advance of the kingdom in the community of Colonia Ramos in Rosarito. Thank you Jesus!

A New Church is Being Born

Pastor Daniel Nuñez with Pastor Obed Lares & Cesiah and their three children on the land where the church is being built

This weekend is very exciting as we partner with our friends from Ministerios Transformación to build church #29. I will take a group down from San Diego to start this Saturday the 8th of October and then finish on the following Saturday, the 15th of October.

This is one of the highlights of the year for us to be involved in starting a new church. Every time we help plant a church I think of the lives that will be changed as a result of the ministry of these churches.

Obed & Cesiah Lares

Obed & Cesiah Lares

Pastor Obed Lares will be leading this church plant. Dawn and I have grown to love Obed and his wife, Cesiah over the last several months as we’ve gotten to know them. They have tremendous gifts and they love the Lord.

I can’t wait to see all that the Lord will do through them. I believe many lives will be transformed by the power of the gospel. The light of Christ is coming to this dark place, and it will shine brightly.

Pray with Us

Please pray for us as we are already experiencing some attack from the enemy. Pray for our family and the safety of all those that join us on the trip.

I asked  our son, David Jr. to come out and help us out. This is a special blessing for us. David loves building the churches, so he agreed to fly down, in order to be with us! It’s an added bonus.

Thank you Jesus for your marvelous work!

The Foundation is Being Laid
IMG_4835.jpg

Pastor Daniel Nunez with Obed & Cesiah and family on the land where church #29 will be built

Daniel sent me an exciting message earlier today. He said, “we are putting in the foundation today.” He was referring to the foundation for church number 29 for Ministerios Transformación.

I’m working with pastor Daniel and coordinating a group of churches in San Diego that are part of the Harbor network to go down to Mexico on October 8th and 15th to help build the church. It’s a wonderful experience to bring people together to start something new, especially when it’s a new church that will bring the light of Christ into a community!

img_4833

The foundation of the church is being laid!

Of course, in order to be able to build the church, we need a strong foundation. I told Daniel to make sure he sent me a picture of the progress today.

On Tuesday night Dawn, Hannah and I met with pastor Obed Lares and his wife, Cesiah. They are the church planters for this church. We’ve grown to love them over the months that we’ve met with them. They are a wonderful young couple, who love Jesus!

While we were together we studied the importance of developing discernment in ministry. I love how teachable Obed and Cesiah are. When we were about done Obed shared about some of the bad experiences they had in the past. He said, “we didn’t have the opportunity to study this when we ministered before.”

This demonstrated something positive to me that they are reflecting and learning from their past experiences. One of the many things that encourages me about Obed and Cesiah is while they are sensitive to the Lord, they also realize they have more to learn.

God Hears Our Prayers
Obed & Cesiah Lares

Obed & Cesiah Lares

I love being able to have Dawn and Hannah with me when they can join me. They are gifted in prayer. Obed shared that his back was bothering him, so Hannah led us in prayer, and Obed’s back began to feel better. By the way I just texted Obed before I sent this out, and he said his back still feels good. Thank you Jesus!

Also, while we were praying and just coming before the Lord, God’s Spirit began to work in Obed. Dawn noticed that tears came to his eyes, and she asked him what was going on. He shared that the Lord reminded him of his brother-in-law’s spiritual need.

His brother-in-law hasn’t been doing well and Obed believes the Lord is encouraging him to go talk to him.

It was so encouraging to see the Lord working through our family, but also in the lives of our friends. The church that Obed leads will be blessed to have him as a loving caring pastor who wants to seek the Lord in all he does.

Join us in prayer for our friends, and for the building and planting of this new church. We are in a battle, and we need warriors to stand with us in the battle.

God’s Amazing Work of Grace in 2015!
Dave with Victor and Sol Bravo in front of their church

Dave with Victor and Sol Bravo in front of their church

As we approach the end of 2015 it’s a time to reflect on all that the Lord has done! A time to remember all we have to be thankful for.

I’d like to share some of the highlights from this past year.

One of the favorite things I’ve been able to do over the past four years is partner with Lo Mejor del Trigo to start a new church. This March we were able to come alongside our friends led by Pastor Daniel Nuñez to help start church number 24 for LMT. Pastor Victor Bravo is leading this church in Rosarito, Mexico – Plan Libertador. I recently had the opportunity to interview Victor and his wife, Sol and upload it on YouTube. You can view the video below.

Praying for Peace in La Paz
Dave, Dawn and Hannah with Peter & Jenny, Victor, Fanny and Xaris in La Paz

Dave, Dawn and Hannah with Peter & Jenny, Victor, Fanny and Xaris in La Paz

In May Pastor Victor Gonzalez moved to La Paz, Baja California Sur with his wife, Fanny and their daughter Xaris to start a new church planting project. This is a huge win for us as it took a lot of effort to get this project started. This will be the first Presbyterian church with the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico in this city of 250,000. We are praying for many to come to know the Prince of Peace in La Paz.

Keys to a Transformed Life!

This summer a number of pastors, leaders and missionaries went through a workshop on Keys to a Transformed Life with us in San Antonio de Las Minas near Ensenada. The Lord broke through in their lives and brought healing and renewal as we dealt with root issues. As the Lord heals us, we become more effective in leading others towards wholeness in Christ.

VBS fun!

VBS fun!

Summer VBS Fun

Another highlight during the summer was having a group from Skyview Presbyterian Church come to work with the Nueva Jerusalen church in Ensenada. This was the second year in a row that the church has come to help with VBS. As a result of a return visit we saw relationships deepened, and the ministry of the church strengthened. Hallelujah!

God’s Healing Through Medical Missions

God also gave us the opportunity to lead two medical missions outreaches in Ensenada. The medical clinic attracted more people than any outreach Dawn and I have ever been apart of. It was exciting to have such loving and caring doctors and staff treating the patients. The medical attention opened the door for us to pray with each patient and see a number of them put their faith in Christ.

Assessment & Coaching for Church Planters and Leaders
Our group of assessors and church planting candidates

Our group of assessors and church planting candidates

This Fall we held two major events for church planting in Tijuana and Baja California. In November 11 church planting candidate couples went through an assessment center. The need for workers, for church planters remains great, so it was a huge win for us to be able to successfully hold our first assessment center.

Then to finish the year off in December we held our first Gospel Coach training. The Lord gave us a good group of pastors, leaders and missionaries. It was an important first step as we work towards developing a coaching network to support all the pastors, leaders and church planters we are working with.

So Much to be Thankful For!

These are the highlights. There are too many wonderful things that the Lord did to mention them all. It’s so good to think back on God’s outstanding work. The church is advancing! It’s a reminder that we are more than conquerors in Christ!

Dave & Dawn

Dave & Dawn

Dawn and I are cognizant of the fact that we couldn’t be involved in these activities, and we wouldn’t have success if we didn’t have a wonderful group of friends and ministry partners surrounding us! We give thanks for you. Your prayers and your encouragement are vital to the advance of the gospel on the Border, the Baja and Beyond!

We can’t wait to see what the Lord will do in 2016! Hallelujah!

Help Us End the Year Strong

Join us in prayer so that we will end the year strong financially so that we’re able to capitalize on the exciting opportunities in front of us in 2016!

Construction of Lo Mejor del Trigo’s 26th church

Dawn and I are giving thanks for the latest church that Pastor Daniel Nuñez and our friends at Lo Mejor del Trigo are starting. This weekend they built church #26 in the community of Maclovio Rojas in Tijuana.

About 10 years ago the Lord gave Pastor Daniel the vision to plant 50 churches in his lifetime, and each year LMT gets closer to realizing that vision.

Pastor Daniel Nuñez

Each of these churches are giving testimony to the light of Christ. They are making a difference in the communities that they serve in. The good news of Jesus is reaching many, and lives are being transformed.

Dawn and I have had the privilege of helping directly with four of LMT’s church plants, and indirectly we’ve been involved with some of the other churches they’ve started.

We are praying and working for a renewed Tijuana and a renewed Baja. The Lord has given us some wonderful partners here on the border who have a similar vision. We rejoice in His good work!
