Celebrating Freedom in Mexico—and in Christ
This week, Mexico is celebrating its Independence Day—a time filled with music, family, food, fireworks, and the proud cry of “¡Viva México!” The celebrations begin September 15th, with El Grito de Independencia, and continue September 16th, as Mexico celebrates its independence.
As we celebrate with our friends and ministry partners throughout Mexico, I’m reminded of another kind of freedom—the freedom we have in Christ.
And there is something especially meaningful happening in Oaxaca.
From a Carport to a Thriving Church
On Sunday, September 13, Hospital de Fe Church in Oaxaca officially became an organized church. It was a beautiful celebration, with more than 200 people in attendance!
Pastor Eliel and his wife, Jessica, have done an amazing job leading this church. It’s hard to believe that six years ago, they were just beginning this ministry and meeting in a carport.
Today, that little beginning has grown into a thriving church filled with life, young people, new believers, families, and leaders.
What a testimony to God’s faithfulness!
A Vision to Reach the Next Generation
From the beginning, God gave Eliel and Jessica a vision to reach young people. They recognized that young adults and young families represent one of the greatest opportunities for reaching the next generation with the Gospel.
They stepped out in faith—and God has been opening doors.
Hospital de Fe is part of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico. Like many denominations, the Presbyterian Church in Mexico has a process for establishing new churches.
A church begins as a mission church. As it grows, develops leaders, and meets certain requirements, it can eventually become an organized, self-governing church.
That is what happened at Hospital de Fe.
The church now has more than 60 members, along with a developed leadership team of elders and deacons. After six years of ministry, they have reached an important milestone: Hospital de Fe is now an officially organized church!
🎉 A Celebration of God’s Faithfulness
Dawn, Jonathan, and I have had the privilege of visiting Hospital de Fe, and several of our friends there have written to tell us how excited they are about what God is doing.
Our friend Keyla, who I previously wrote about and who serves through dental mission work, shared:
“It was very moving to see so many people and the place was packed. The food was delicious, the church is growing.”
She also asked us to pray for Pastor Eliel and his family because with this new stage of ministry comes greater responsibility.
And we agree.
Please pray for them as they step into this new season.
🙌 Why This Is So Special to Us
For us, this is a particularly meaningful milestone.
We have seen many of our church plants grow over the years, but Hospital de Fe is the first of our church plants in Mexico to grow to the point of becoming an officially organized church.
That is a big deal!
And there is more to celebrate.
Our church Vida Durango, in the state of Durango, is also preparing to become an organized church, hopefully at the beginning of 2027.
We are praying that this will be the beginning of many more churches reaching this important milestone.
Look at what God is doing:
- 👥 Young people are being reached
- ❤️ New believers are coming to Christ
- 💧 People are being baptized
- 🙏 Leaders are being developed
- ⛪ A healthy, growing church has been established
This is why we do what we do.
We want to see healthy, Spirit-filled, Gospel-centered churches planted throughout Mexico, Cuba, and beyond.
