A Surprising Open Door
Sometimes, God’s greatest open doors start with an opportunity that looks entirely too small.
When a ministry partner, Pastor Esau Reyes from Mexico, first introduced me to Pastor Edgar Flores in Bolivia, he mentioned a small network of just four local Presbyterian churches interested in church planting. To be completely honest, I didn’t feel a strong push to pursue it. Our calling is focused on building expansive, multiplying church networks, and a handful of congregations felt like a small starting point, taking into consideration how far away we are from Bolivia.
But Pastor Edgar was faithful. He kept reaching out, keeping the ball rolling, and urging us to share our vision with his community. Finally, we set up a Zoom call to see if any local leaders might want to hear about strategic church multiplication.
When the video screens loaded, I sat back in absolute amazement. Sixty eager pastors and ministry leaders had packed into the call.
Moving Past the Comfort Zone
What I thought was a closed or quiet door was actually a strategic gateway. That initial surprise was just the beginning. Realizing that many other local pastors couldn’t make a daytime meeting due to work commitments, Edgar arranged a second video conference at a different time. Another 50 leaders showed up—some returning for more, and many joining us for the very first time.
My good friend and fellow ministry partner, Pastor Ivan Villalta, jumped in to help navigate these dynamic sessions. Together, we poured into these Bolivian leaders, teaching them about healthy Kingdom leadership, the danger of trying to minister in isolation, and the absolute necessity of pastoral mentoring.
It was a humbling reminder to me that we should never despise small beginnings or make assumptions about what God is doing behind the scenes.
Igniting a Vision for Multiplication
Through these deep, cross-border conversations, we learned that while the passion of these Bolivian believers is immense, the churches face critical hurdles. They are hungry for a greater, more aggressive vision to plant new works, and they deeply need the structural strategy, resources, and practical training required to multiply congregations across Bolivia successfully.
It is incredibly exciting to see the Lord’s hand moving our ministry into completely new territory. We are standing on the threshold of an unexpected harvest field, and we are eager to see exactly where He takes this partnership.
Yet, this open door comes at a time of immense challenge. Pastor Edgar shared with us that La Paz, Bolivia, is currently gripped by a severe political crisis. Intense road blockades have cut off supply lines, causing local families to suffer deeply from acute food shortages. It reminds us that we are entering a field that is not only spiritually hungry but physically hurting.
