Hope and Help for Our Familia on the Big Island
The Big Island continues to face overwhelming need. Just today, one of the pastors asked me when we could send the monthly financial aid because they were without food. His words weighed heavily on Dawn and me. We carry our brothers and sisters there daily in our prayers, asking God to provide for them.
Spiritual Opposition and Breakthrough
In addition to material hardship, the pastors face intense spiritual opposition. Pastor Oniel recently told me how they went to tear down an altar and destroy the idols and instruments of a leading witch in African Santería who had recently given her life to Christ. She is now actively involved in the church. They also destroyed another altar belonging to another woman who had practiced witchcraft.
Witchcraft and Santería are common in Cuba, and the spiritual warfare is real and visible. Yet God’s light is breaking through the darkness, setting captives free.
Daily Struggles for Basic Needs
Another pastor shared that their community has gone three months without a supply of drinking water. They must buy water from a man outside of town, as well as food, because the power outages make local storage and refrigeration impossible.
Pastor Eliaquín explained, “The state has no way to sustain the situation, and the entire population is desperate.”
Your Support Is Opening Doors
Despite these challenges, the aid we send is blessing many families and opening doors to share the hope of Jesus. Pastor Yeisel shared,
“Thanks to our friend David and those who have supported us, my family has been blessed throughout this year. We are delivering food to more than 40 people on Wednesdays, and many of these people, on the day we arrive, have nothing to eat. Thank you for your support—God bless you.”
Reaching the Next Generation
Through Hannah’s Toys of Hope, we are reaching children and families across many towns and cities. The children receive toys and snacks, but most importantly, they hear the Gospel. Many children—and often their parents—are coming to Christ.
Yaima shared one recent story:
“We had a marvelous time in a small church where there were almost no children. We held an evangelistic event, and 25 children came, along with some parents. Eleven children and one mother confessed Christ as their Savior. This was the first time this church had ever hosted a VBS.”
The joy on the children’s faces as they receive new sandals or a special gift is matched only by the joy in heaven over each life transformed.
