When the Gospel Meets Lucha Libre: A Surprising Church Launch

A New Church is Born in Durango

We are thrilled to announce that on Sunday, August 17th, Pastor Noe Reyes and his team officially launched public worship services for their new church plant, El Camino (The Way). The mother church is Vida Durango (Life Church Durango), and Noe is training two emerging leaders, Julio and Arturo, who are helping shepherd this new congregation.

For now, the church is meeting in a restaurant with a Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) theme. It’s a unique and lighthearted setting—murals of famous wrestlers cover the walls, including the legendary El Santo (“The Saint”). In fact, the restaurant is called Santo Restaurante.

If you look at the photo above, it almost appears as though the wrestler is about to leap onto the preacher! While humorous, it also serves as a good reminder of the spiritual battle we face as we serve the Lord. Paul writes in Ephesians 6:11–12:

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Pastor Noe has shared that his team has already experienced some spiritual opposition, and we are standing with them in prayer for God’s covering and protection.

A Vision for Multiplication

It’s always encouraging to witness a new church take root. Not long ago, the mother church, Vida Durango, was struggling to grow and facing its own spiritual battles. But God has been faithful. Today, more than 70 people gather each Sunday at Vida Durango, and they are now strong enough to give birth to a new congregation.

We are deeply thankful that the Lord has given Pastor Noe the vision not only to launch El Camino but also to develop a network of churches in the Durango region.

Vida Durango is also part of El Centro para Plantación de Iglesias (CPI), one of our key ministry partners in Mexico. We are so grateful to collaborate with CPI to advance God’s kingdom through church planting.
