God’s Faithfulness in the Midst of the Fire and Loss

God’s Faithfulness and Restoration in Rojo Gomez

The Lord gave Dawn and me a wonderful opportunity this past Sunday to visit our dear friends, Pastor Abraham and his wife, Martha. We loved worshiping with them and their congregation—it was the first time we had seen the church since the repairs were completed after the fire.

You might remember that the day after Easter, someone set their church on fire. It’s truly a miracle that no one was hurt and that the church didn’t suffer even greater damage. Abraham and Martha told us that around 4 a.m., they were awakened by strange noises. At first, they weren’t sure what was happening, but then a neighbor cried out, “The church is on fire!”

Abraham rushed to the roof with a hose to stop the flames from spreading. A church member who lives nearby joined him, and together they fought the blaze for 40 minutes until the firemen arrived. Abraham said the fire grew so intense that he became completely exhausted—a fireman had to help him climb down from the roof.

What could have ended in tragedy became a testimony of God’s mercy.

Rebuilding and Expanding

We were so encouraged to see how many people responded with generosity after the fire. Because of your prayers and donations, the church was not only repaired, but they were also able to make improvements to expand its space. These updates will strengthen the ministry of the church and extend its reach into the community of Rojo Gómez.

Dawn and I always love going to Rojo Gómez and spending time with Abraham, Martha, and their church family. Our relationship goes back many years—back in 2014, we were blessed to help them build the pastoral home right next to the church. On Sunday, I had the privilege of preaching, and together, Dawn and I prayed for and encouraged the congregation.

The Lord also gave us an opportunity to minister to our friend, Pastor Manuel Vargas. In early May, his wife, Judith, suddenly passed away and moved to heaven. Since her passing, I’ve been praying with Manuel from a distance, but it was a blessing to finally sit with him, encourage him face-to-face, and lift him up in prayer.

Since our daughter Hannah moved to heaven, Dawn and I carry a deep burden to walk with others who are grieving. We understand the pain of loss and want to be present with those who are hurting

🙏 Join us in Prayer

Before and after picture of the fire and rebuild.

  • Protection for Pastor Abraham, Martha, their children, and the church community—that the Lord would guard them from further harm and surround them with His peace.

  • A powerful testimony to the community—that this fire and restoration would point many hearts to Christ as a sign of God’s faithfulness and provision.

  • Greater outreach and impact—that the church would grow stronger through this season, drawing many more in their neighborhood to know Jesus.

Thank you for standing with us in prayer; your intercession is a vital part of what God is doing in Rojo Gomez.
