I love being able to highlight good news coming out of Mexico. Each day I read a number of news feeds about Mexico, and it’s not all good news, so it is always a source of encouragement to read about positive change in Mexico.
Just last week an article came out from SanDiegoRed.com that reported that Tijuana is 28% safer than Chicago. Read article here…
I already posted this article on Facebook a few days ago, but I wanted to make sure that you saw it in case you didn’t see my Facebook post.
There’s been a huge change for the better over the last five years in Tijuana.
Dawn and I visited Chicago this summer, and we didn’t feel like we were in an unruly city. The media does play a big part in our perception of a place.
This quote from the article titled, Tijuana is much safer than Chicago, written by Brenda Colin and Omar Martinez describes some of our misconceptions and challenges of changing those misconceptions.
It’s very common when speaking well of Mexico that the neighbors up north do not recognize the changes that have been made, and continue to make comments about “the great danger of visiting Mexico”, but for those who have come and visit its cities, they know well that its nothing like “they” make it seem to be.
Comparing Tijuana and Chicago is only one example of how important is to look further into details before making your own judgments, and not just going by what everyone else thinks.
Keep praying for a renewed Tijuana and a revived border.

You think that perhaps those that leveraged the safety of of Tijuana higher than Chicago were talking about the South Side – the most reportedly dangerous area of Chicago? There are other areas of Chicago that are considered “safe.” Which area(s) did you visit this summer and which factors influenced your perceptions of the city?

My wife and I had a good experience in Chicago apart from noticing that it was very expensive. We were mostly downtown and then out in the suburbs.
This article states that Tijuana is safer than Chicago, because there were fewer murders in Tijuana over the last year. This is a good trend for Tijuana, but obviously you still need to be careful when visiting, which I suppose is a generally good practice when visiting any large city.

I have often wondered about your safety, but the media spins everything. Reading your post here is a reminder of how the secular world depicts God. They have made him out to be something he is not.

Things are definitely getting better here. I think the people feel safer, and the statistics bear out the improvement. It is still a challenge to change the perception of Americans and others after so many years of bad news.
The other thing working against is that there still is violence in some parts of Mexico, and people tend to clump the whole country together. It’s kind of like reading about all the problems in Detroit, and then based on that assuming that the U.S.mis an unsafe place.

The threat of physical harm is great in either city equally. The danger presented in Chicago is that it has become a hub of secular thought, and spiritual depravity. Thanks for your hard work in the Kingdom!
