Hope in the Midst of Hardship: Ministry on the Big Island

Imagine the power going out—again—in the heat of a tropical afternoon. The refrigerator falls silent, and the food you stretched your budget to buy begins to spoil. The medicine your sick mother needs is nowhere to be found. Outside, neighborhood children are asking strangers for something to eat.
For many families on the Big Island, this isn’t a hypothetical. It’s daily life.
Recently, some friends who grew up on the Big Island returned from visiting their families there. What they described broke our hearts. And yet, woven through every hard report was a story of remarkable faith.
The Growing Challenges

The situation on the island continues to deteriorate. Trash is piling up in the streets. Many roads are crumbling, filled with potholes, standing water, and debris. Ongoing electrical shortages leave families without power for long stretches, and in a hot climate, that means food spoils quickly. Meanwhile, the prices of basic necessities keep rising, making it harder and harder for families to put food on the table.
Our pastoral partners and ministry leaders tell us that medicine is in short supply for those who are sick, and that many elderly people and children are going hungry—some are even begging in the streets. On top of this, youth gangs have been assaulting people traveling by car and motorcycle, adding fear and insecurity to an already difficult daily life.
It is heartbreaking to know that so many families are struggling just to meet their most basic needs.
Faith That Inspires Us

What amazes me most is that our friends rarely complain. Despite everything they face, they keep sharing the Gospel, caring for those in need, and faithfully serving their communities.
I am deeply grateful for their faith and perseverance. Watching these pastors and leaders serve Jesus in such difficult circumstances strengthens my own faith. Their lives remind me that the hope we have in Christ does not depend on our circumstances. Even in seasons of great hardship, God’s love continues to shine through His people.
We are thankful for the opportunity to reach so many families through our partnerships with these faithful pastors and leaders. Through their local relationships and compassionate service, we can bring both practical help and the hope of the Gospel to people who desperately need both.
Bringing Hope Through Hannah’s Toys of Hope

One of the greatest joys of our ministry is seeing how Hannah’s Toys of Hope blesses so many families. There is something beautiful about the smiles on the faces of children—and their parents—when they receive a gift. In the midst of so much uncertainty, these simple expressions of love remind families that they are not forgotten.
Through Hannah’s Toys of Hope and the financial assistance we send to families in need, we are able to extend help and encouragement to many people. None of this would be possible without your generosity.
Ten Years of Hope Through Hannah’s Legacy

October 18 marked ten years since our daughter Hannah moved to heaven. It is hard to believe a decade has passed. We miss her deeply, yet we are grateful for the hope we have in Christ and the assurance of eternal life with Him.
Hannah’s Toys of Hope is one of the ways her legacy continues to touch lives. What began as a way to honor her memory has become an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus and share the eternal hope we have in Him.
Recently, one of the pastors we partner with sent us a message that deeply touched our hearts:
“I greatly admire the spiritual maturity that you, Leti (Dawn), and your family have developed. Your lives minister to us. Seeing genuine faith in action through your lives gives me strength. I often share your story with my family and with the churches where we minister. The ministry of Hannah’s Toys of Hope allows us not only to remember her, but also to speak about our heavenly and eternal hope and the divine comfort God the Father gives us through Christ.”
His words were a beautiful reminder that God can bring hope and encouragement out of even our deepest pain. We never imagined all the ways Hannah’s life would continue to touch others, and we are grateful that her legacy helps us share both the love of Jesus and the promise of eternal hope.

Thank you for being part of this ministry. Your prayers, generosity, and faithful partnership enable us to support local leaders, care for families in need, and share the life-changing hope of the Gospel.
Together, we are making a difference—not because circumstances are easy, but because God remains faithful.
