Restoring Love, Reaching the Lost

Strengthening Marriages, Building the Church

There’s nothing more inspiring than seeing couples grow together in faith and love. This past week, twelve pastoral couples serving in cities across Mexico—Tijuana, Mexicali, La Paz, Durango, Oaxaca, Tuxtla, Colima, Chihuahua, and Ciudad Obregón—went through a marriage and family training course.

The course, The Art of Marriage, created by CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ), is designed both for those who are exploring faith and for new believers. Because marriage is such a common struggle, the training provides a natural bridge to reach people inside and outside the church.

One of our church-planting couples, Armando and Lady Cuevas, who are serving in Chihuahua, told me how they’ve been using this course to connect with new families. They’ve been faithfully planting their church there for two years.

When I saw how effective this tool was, I asked Armando if he could help train other pastors and leaders. That’s how this new initiative began.

A Sweet Reminder of Our Roots

Dawn and I enjoyed going through the material ourselves. It reminded us of our days with CRU back when it was still called Campus Crusade. Dawn was on staff with Crusade when I met her, and I was studying at their seminary in San Bernardino, California.

Later, when we lived in Colorado Springs, we attended “A Weekend to Remember” through FamilyLife Ministries (the same ministry that developed this course). It was life-changing for us then, and it’s a blessing to see these same resources now equipping pastors in Mexico.

During the training, we even saw a couple featured in the video sessions whom I had studied with in seminary—what a small world!

Strength for Pastors and Their Marriages

Each couple in the training is asked to complete exercises to help strengthen their own marriage. That’s a huge blessing. Many of the pastoral couples we walk alongside face real struggles in their marriages, and we’ve often had to step in to help.

This course not only equips them to guide other couples but also ministers to them personally, giving them tools to restore and strengthen their own relationships.

Some of the pastors are already planning to start marriage courses in their churches within the next couple of months. Please pray with us that the Lord would use this resource to heal, strengthen, and multiply marriages throughout Mexico.
